Second Chances for Dogs and People

Building a Life-Changing Bridge Between Dogs, Deaf Individuals, and Recovery

At Northwest Dog Rescue and Service Training Center, our mission is grounded in compassion and second chances. Based in Washington State, we rescue shelter dogs and train them to become certified hearing service companions for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. These service dogs are placed free of charge, along with lifetime follow-up support. But we don't stop there, our center also provides job training for individuals in recovery, offering them purpose and healing through hands-on work with our dogs. Inspired by a deeply personal journey of love and loss, our organization brings together the most vulnerable among us dogs, people in recovery, and those who navigate life without hearing, and helps them find strength, stability, and a future together.

Why we started this

My name is Jason Strickland, and this mission was born from loss, love, and the power of second chances. A few years ago, I lost everything, my wife of 30 years passed away unexpectedly, and not long after, my father passed too. I shut down the construction company I ran for 25 years. I was grieving, homeless, and broken. The only thing that kept me going was my dog, Monkey.

Monkey didn’t just save me, he gave me purpose. When I met Donna, who is hearing impaired, Monkey became more than my best friend. I trained him to respond to hand signals and alert her to sounds. He became her ears, my heart, and our hope.

From that, the vision was born: rescue dogs from shelters, train the ones with the right temperament to become hearing service dogs, and give people recovering from addiction the opportunity to rebuild their lives, just like I did.

Northwest Dog Rescue & Service Training Center isn’t just about saving dogs. It’s about saving lives, canine and human. It’s about connection, compassion, and community. We train with heart, we heal with purpose, and we give everyone, dog or human, the chance to become something more.

🌲 October Update: Our First Rescues, Our Growing Hope

Some milestones change everything, and this month, Northwest Dog Rescue & Service Training Center reached one of those moments.
We welcomed our very first three rescue puppies, bright-eyed, tail-wagging reminders of why this mission began.
They’re Border Collie and Pitbull mixes, playful and gentle, and they’ve already stolen every heart they’ve met.
If we had our facility right now, they’d be the start of our service dog training program, learning to change lives the way Monkey did.
But until those doors open, these little ones need loving forever homes.
💚 Adoption fee: $50 (covers care and basic vetting).
If your home is ready for love, and your heart has room for a story that’s just beginning, they’re waiting for you.
Meanwhile, we’re keeping momentum:

Continuing to apply for grants to secure our permanent facility.
Expanding our community outreach and donor support.
Launching handmade donation bags, crafted with care by Donna and our team — each one unique, each one helping us grow.
💚 Donate $20 or more and receive a handmade bag as our thank-you. Every stitch brings us closer to building the sanctuary these dogs — and so many others — deserve.
And don’t forget: 📖 “Echoes of the Heart”, Jason’s poetry book, is now live on Amazon.
Every copy sold helps fund our rescue, our training center, and the future of this mission.
This is where it starts — the first rescues, the first lives changed, the first steps toward something lasting.
The road’s long, but the heart behind it is stronger than ever.
